Bill Of Materials

A Bill of Materials (BOM) is a structured list of components, raw materials, and assemblies required to complete a job or manufacture a product. In SAM (Service & Asset Manager), the BOM feature is included within the parts module. It allows businesses to efficiently define, manage, and track materials used in their products and service.

For example, a toolkit is a product assembly which consists of the following components – a tool box, a spanner set and a screwdriver

Toolkit (Product Assembly)
Tool box (Component) Spanner
Spanner Set (Component)
Screwdriver (Component)

In this toolkit example, the spanner set could itself consist of two different spanners. It would be called a sub-assembly of the main assembly.

Toolkit (Product Assembly)
Spanner Set (Sub-Assembly)
Spanner A (Component)
Spanner B (Component)
Screwdriver (Component)

In SAM each product assembly, sub-assembly and component should be set up as a separate product record.

Before creating a Bill of Materials (BOM) you should:
• Create the individual component product records.
• Plan the bill of materials on paper first, working from the lowest level of the assembly.

Setting Up a Bill of Materials (BOM)

To set up a Bill of Materials (BOM) for a product, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Parts Module

    • Go to the Parts Module Overview screen, where you will see a list of all available parts.
    • You can either create a new part or select an existing stock code for the BOM from the list of parts.
  2. Select or Create the Part

    • Once you’ve selected a part code, the Part Details window will automatically pop up, displaying relevant details for the product.
    • At this stage, you can either update the existing details or enter new details specific to the BOM.
  3. Enter BOM-Specific Details

    • After filling in the necessary details, click on the BOM menu item.
    • A new popup window will appear, click on the add new button to show a list of all parts in the system.
    • Select all the required parts for the BOM from the dropdown list, and when complete click the save button.
  4. Check Stock Availability with Trial Build

    • Use the Trial Build feature to verify if you have enough stock to create the BOM items.
    • If stock is sufficient, proceed with the Build Part function to allocate all necessary sub-assemblies for the build.
